Spa Stay Select's trip to Old Thorns Manor Hotel, Hampshire

Published: 25th June 2013
The team at recently had a fantastic visit to Old Thorns Manor Hotel and Spa in Hampshire on an overnight spa break.

We were certainly in need of a little pampering and some relaxation time, as we had just had a hectic few weeks at work, so we were looking forward to our visit – and we were not disappointed!

Old Thorns Manor is situated in 400 acres of stunning countryside with borders of Hampshire, Sussex and Surrey, just 35 minutes from Portsmouth and approximately 20 minutes from Guildford, so it really is very accessible.

On our arrival at Old Thorns Manor we were pleased to find extensive parking facilities directly opposite the main entrance building, so we immediately knew we were off to a good start!

As we entered the main building we were stunned by the glamorous photography & ornamental displays, stylish seating areas, chandeliers and stairway to the spa area - all which made us eager to explore the remainder of the hotel.

The reception area also provided a large reception desk where the friendly staff made us feel very welcome and booked us into... our own 4 bedroom apartment! (Normally guests who stay on a spa break will stay in the main hotel bedrooms, which offer easy access to spa and leisure facilities.) Our stay had coincided with a very busy weekend at Old Thorns Manor – hence we were allocated one of the 2 bookable apartments, (which are housed separately from the hotel bedrooms)

The hotel incorporates a number of spacious designer style buildings which include: reception, spa, restaurant, leisure club & gym, conference facilities, bars, Starbucks and their own golf shop.

All the bedrooms in the hotel (and apartments) are stylish and comfortable, with all the amenities you would expect of a 4 star hotel. The beds in the apartment were really comfortable and we had plenty of room to store our overnight belongings. (We also got the opportunity for a show round of bedrooms in the main hotel – and they too had the same amenities and comfy beds!)

The Spa and treatment rooms have recently been refurbished to a very high standard – there is an elegant, sophisticated feel to the whole venue, which includes great wall art, mirrors, glamorous designer seating... so, on entering the reception area we could tell that we were in for a real treat! As requested we had arrived 10 minutes or so before our pre-booked treatment times, we received a very warm welcome from the spa reception team and then we were shown to a seating area and asked to complete our treatment cards and we were then also given our robes and slipper packs.

Sara (the Spa Manager) then showed us through to use the Spa’s wet facilities where we thoroughly enjoyed using the swimming pool, the very relaxing hydrotherapy pool, steam room, foot spa, and sauna, and for a couple of the braver girls – the bucket shower and ice rub!

We also were shown the top of the range gymnasium – where there must be every piece of gym equipment ever made, it really is fantastic and the views over the golf course are stunning. However, for some strange reason, we declined to make use of the gym, but decided to make our way back to the Spa reception and then - as if by magic, our therapists materialized in front of us to guide us to our treatment rooms.

Old Thorns Manor boasts 8 treatment rooms, a great relaxation room, both manicure and pedicure stations, a make-up bar – and for when the weather is good you can make good use of its outdoor terrace with views over the golf course, plenty of seating and a very inviting large bubbling hot tub!

In each of the treatment rooms there were candles with divine fragrances, soothing music played and therapy beds were gently heated! We had already decided on having a mix of facials and body massages and any aches and niggles were soon kneaded and massaged away and our faces were soon rehydrated and revitalized. Sheer Bliss!

We were all very pleased with our treatments and full of praise for the friendly and professional manner of the therapists (guaranteed to put you at ease)!

Later we changed for dinner and had a very entertaining evening in the carvery restaurant, enjoying our choice of main menu, sampling some excellent wine and deliberating over the great desserts that we could choose from (of course we all had to try each others' – just in case!)

Another small note to add is that one of the group also had a concern regarding her dinner as she is gluten-free; this was swiftly forgotten after the chef took the time to make her a small pot of gluten-free gravy and pointed out which food would be suitable. A genuine and appreciated touch that made a thoroughly enjoyable meal even better.

Dining at Old Thorns Manor

If you are looking for the use of all the amenities, but want something a little different, then you can always opt to stay in one of the newly built Eco Pods. This really is "glamping" (glamorous camping). Absolutely ideal for overnight getaways with a difference!

We feel that Old Thorns Manor's great facilities can provide a perfect spa break or a spa day for solos, couples, hen parties, golfing groups and corporate requirements.
